Republican Party Exec Director Accused of TerrorismBy SUNITA SOHRABJI indiawest.comNovember 26, 2008 06:38:00 PM In an often-tense post-9/11 environment, the Indian American executive director of the Orange County Republican Party was investigated for possible terrorist activity by the Orange, Calif., police department Nov. 18, following a tip-off by a local resident who overheard him speaking on his cell phone about assault rifles. George Andrews, born in South San Francisco, Calif., and of Malayalee descent, was at an automotive shop in Orange, waiting to get his flat tire fixed. �I was talking to one of my staff about invoices, and then we got onto a tangent about Barack Obama and gun control policy,� Andrews told India-West. �You usually don�t see East Indians around here talking on their cell phones about gun policy,� he said. Andrews� conversation was overheard by someone who sent an e-mail to the Orange Police Department, spokesman Sgt. Dan Adams told India-West. The OPD has its own agent of the Department of Homeland Security, who headed the investigation into the matter, said Adams. �We get e-mails and phone calls from a variety of people,� said Adams, adding: �Anytime anyone overhears something that could be a threat to the nation, we�re going to look into it.� Adams said that Andrews� ethnicity was not a factor in the decision to investigate further, and added that the case was now closed. Police went to Andrews� home, where they found a cleaning crew scrubbing down the place. Andrews said his neighbors were also interviewed, before police and the DHS agent came to his office to speak to him. �Ten minutes into the conversation, they realized I was the last person who would be involved in terrorist activity,� said Andrews, adding that his home was being cleaned thoroughly as he is moving to Sacramento to serve on California state assemblywoman Diane Harkey�s staff. �I thought it was a joke. I thought my friends were pulling a prank on me because I was leaving,� said Andrews, whose family hails from Trivandrum. �It�s good to see that the Homeland Security Task Force was hard at work and doing its job,� he told India-West, adding: �It was unfortunate what happened, but I wasn�t worried because I don�t own any assault rifles.� �We have to be careful about who we go after, but you have to look at it from a 30,000 foot perspective,� said Andrews, conceding, however: �I understand that if I hadn�t been able to articulate my position, I might have been in trouble.� Civil rights attorney Dawinder �Dave� Sidhu told India-West there is no expectation of privacy when someone says something in public, whether it is a conversation on a cell phone or otherwise. �Accordingly, that someone listened to this conversation in a place of business should not, by itself, raise any concerns,� he said. �What may be problematic, however, is that the content of the conversation, combined specifically with Mr. Andrews's perceived race, national origin, or religion, may have compelled the eavesdropper to call the authorities,� said Sidhu, a founding director of the Discrimination and National Security Initiative, which examines the mistreatment of minority communities during times of war or crisis, including post-9/11 backlash. �After 9/11, South Asians have engaged in innocuous conduct only to be harassed because their harmless conduct is viewed differently � and more suspiciously � in light of their appearance,� he said. Andrews has been the executive director of the Orange County Republican Party since January 2007. Previously, he served as the San Francisco Bay Area field director for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger�s re-election bid in 2006. He also worked on Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman�s campaign in 2006, and served as deputy campaign manager for Harkey�s bid for a California state Senate seat that same year. Andrews earned a B.A. in political science and history from UC Davis, and is currently working on a masters degree in public administration from California State University Fullerton. |

This is excellent news. Ever American is a part of Homeland Security. If you feel your neighbors might be terrorists it is your civic duty to call the police. We must all be vigilant in these times of turmoil...
